Part 1
The “Summer Camp” is a great
example of ethnography because there are so many examples of it in this
podcast. Ethnography is a branch of anthropology that deals
with the description of specific human cultures, using methods such as close
observation and interviews. The pod cast was about the adventures of summer
camp and how your best childhood moments can come from being in a summer camp.
The interviewer interviewed many people in the summer camp like some of the
kids in the camp and the camp counselor. He interviewed a guy named David who
was a camp counselor and he was “the man” at the camp. Everyone loved him and
respected him and David talks about his personal experiences with the summer
camp. The interviewer also interviewed some kids and I can remember what they
were talking about it was about a game they played called bloody Mary. They
were arguing the whole interview because no one was quite sure how to actually
do the bloody Mary ritual. After trying to say bloody Mary 40 times it didn’t
work and you can hear a kid that is distant from the interviewer say, “I think
you have to do it 50 times!” and this made me laugh because I can remember
doing things like this when I was younger. In the podcast we hear callers
answering the summer camp question and that drew me in more as a listener
because hearing more stories about different camps made it easier to connect
with because maybe you didn’t connect to what the kids in the camp were talking
about, but you could relate to what the callers said.
Becoming
batman is about people’s expectations of people and how it can really affect a
person. They talk about invisible things that can really affect a person. It
shows profile because if you profile someone and set an expectation for someone
it seems like they could do anything. They also interview people, the person I
remember was a blind person that clicked to see where he was going. We hear
from Daniel a blind person that can see by clicking and he feels like many
blind people can do all the things he can do. He thinks that the expectations
of blind people make them unable to do things.
Part 2
When
I was reading the guide lines for our next project I was kind of confused on
what I wanted to do for this project. I knew it had to be something about video
games and the Nicole gave me a great idea on one of her comments on one of my
blogs. Her suggestion was to do a profile of a kid that plays video games and
observe their behavior and I thought this was a great idea. I will probably
observe my little cousin who is in love with video games just like me and I bet
I can get some good observations of him. He likes Call of Duty so I’m sure I
will get plenty of rage from him while he plays that. By observing and doing a
profile on my cousin it can really shed some light on my question because he is
a youth and I can see how these games impact him and make him feel.
i found that this podcast also made me reflect on my child hood. we answered the same question and i had a similar answer. the description actually shows you listened.
ReplyDeleteAs we talked about after class today, Austin, I think your cousin would be a good choice. I think observing him closely over several different vista will be really important before you do the interview. Also, since you're doing a kid, it might actually be better to sort of do the observation and interview together--ask him questions as he is playing--so that you can find out why he is doing what he is doing (and he won't be so freaked out by you sitting down talking to to him intensely). Then, to see how the games affect his normal every day life, you'll probably want to do some observations of him playing with friends (without video games) to see if it afects his social interactionsand such.
