Blog 6: Multimodal Project Proposal

How do video games impact kids?
·      Can kids figure out their identity with video games?
·      Do video games have a bad impact on kids?
·      Can a kid get lost in the fake world of video games?

I want to know if video games mainly have a good impact on kids. I want to make a Facebook page (since older people have took over that area of social media) or a Youtube video that is intended for older people. I want parents to not look down on video games like they are a bad thing and serve no purpose in a kids life. I want people to be able to use video games as a good thing like maybe educational use or what have you.

Parents of kids who play video games in Lincoln that use facebook or watch youtube.
·      They live anywhere in Lincoln
·      30-40 age range
·      Male and female
·      any race
·      any religion, class, or job

I want to do my genre on a facebook page that is intended for Parents in Lincoln that shows the good impact of video games on kids. Maybe a youtube video that goes on the page or create the page around the video. I’m not sure what exactly I want to do yet but it will be something like that. I want to reach kids parents and let them know that video games aren’t bad. Or maybe even an infomercial about the good effects of video games.

YouTube video modes:
·      Voice over
·      Dialogue
·      Text on screen
·      Music
·      Camera Angles
·      Lighting
Facebook page modes:
·      Pictures
·      Graphs
·      Posts
·      Videos
Infomercial modes:
·      Voice over
·      Big words that flash on screen
·      Graphs
·      Facts

I understand Facebook pages and YouTube videos well but I don’t really understand an infomercial.

Project Proposal

·      What is the impact of violent video games on our youth?
·      For this project I’m going to do a profile of my nephew Jakobi.
·      I’m choosing to do a profile on my nephew Jakobi, because he is only 13 years old so he is still a youth in our society and he loves video games.
·      The reason why this profile will shed light on my question because I can look at his reactions of playing certain games and ask him on how he felt while playing it, so that will show the impact it had on him.
·      The thing I will study the most with Jakobi is how he acts while he is playing the games and ask him how he felt while playing the games.
·      I know Jakobi pretty well since he’s my nephew.
·      Call him on his cell phone and tell him I’m coming over.

Questions
1.     What are your favorite types of games?
2.     Why is that your favorite type of game?
3.     Who is your favorite video game character
4.     Why is that your favorite character?
5.     What is your favorite game?
6.     Why is that your favorite game?
7.     Do you feel different emotions while playing different games?
8.     How do you feel when you lay violent games?
9.     How about when you play sports games?
10. What got you into playing video games?
11. Your favorite video game moment and why?
12. How many hours would you say you play video games a week?
13. What draws you towards video games?
14. Do you play with your friends often on the video game?
15. Mario or Master chief…… you can be in one of their games?

I will record this interview with my audio recording on my phone.

Project 2

Part 1
The “Summer Camp” is a great example of ethnography because there are so many examples of it in this podcast. Ethnography is a branch of anthropology that deals with the description of specific human cultures, using methods such as close observation and interviews. The pod cast was about the adventures of summer camp and how your best childhood moments can come from being in a summer camp. The interviewer interviewed many people in the summer camp like some of the kids in the camp and the camp counselor. He interviewed a guy named David who was a camp counselor and he was “the man” at the camp. Everyone loved him and respected him and David talks about his personal experiences with the summer camp. The interviewer also interviewed some kids and I can remember what they were talking about it was about a game they played called bloody Mary. They were arguing the whole interview because no one was quite sure how to actually do the bloody Mary ritual. After trying to say bloody Mary 40 times it didn’t work and you can hear a kid that is distant from the interviewer say, “I think you have to do it 50 times!” and this made me laugh because I can remember doing things like this when I was younger. In the podcast we hear callers answering the summer camp question and that drew me in more as a listener because hearing more stories about different camps made it easier to connect with because maybe you didn’t connect to what the kids in the camp were talking about, but you could relate to what the callers said.
Becoming batman is about people’s expectations of people and how it can really affect a person. They talk about invisible things that can really affect a person. It shows profile because if you profile someone and set an expectation for someone it seems like they could do anything. They also interview people, the person I remember was a blind person that clicked to see where he was going. We hear from Daniel a blind person that can see by clicking and he feels like many blind people can do all the things he can do. He thinks that the expectations of blind people make them unable to do things.
Part 2
When I was reading the guide lines for our next project I was kind of confused on what I wanted to do for this project. I knew it had to be something about video games and the Nicole gave me a great idea on one of her comments on one of my blogs. Her suggestion was to do a profile of a kid that plays video games and observe their behavior and I thought this was a great idea. I will probably observe my little cousin who is in love with video games just like me and I bet I can get some good observations of him. He likes Call of Duty so I’m sure I will get plenty of rage from him while he plays that. By observing and doing a profile on my cousin it can really shed some light on my question because he is a youth and I can see how these games impact him and make him feel.

Artifact (Mario)

Based on the activities we did as a group today in class I got a pretty good revised question for my critical question. My new question is: What is the impact of video games on youth? This question seems that its fits into all the criteria listed because I had smiley faces all over my paper. Maybe people were just being lazy or nice, but even I think it meets all the criteria. I know pretty much everyone in their youth has played some type of video game whether its some type of Mario game or call of duty either one time or another everyone has played a video game so everyone can relate. I think this question will do well with the 3 projects and I look forward to working on these projects during the next 5 weeks.

10 Potential Artifacts
·      The Character Mario
·      Noob Toobers
·      Mountain Dew
·      Sour Patch Kids
·      Columbine School shooting
·      Master Chief
·      Controller
·      Pajama Pants
·      Jurassic Park
·      Memorial Stadium

The artifact I chose to do in my first project will be the character Mario. Mario has always and will forever be my favorite video game character of all time. He’s a plumber that wears overalls and a red hat with the letter M on it. I feel like Mario is always being hated on by many people in the video game world, but the main hater of them all would have to be Bowzer. He’s always trying to steal Mario’s girl and lock her in his terrible castles. Also I feel Mario is a very misunderstood person because it seems like he is always trying to do the right things, but something always tries to stand in his way and it makes him look bad when he has to jump on their head. He’s definitetly evolved from when I first met him on the Nintendo 64 now he is a new and improved version of himself for the WiiU the newest Nintendo platform. Mario has been a big staple in my life from when I was a little boy till now. Whether he’s riding a go kart, riding Yoshi, jumping through pipes, or jumping over barrels I’ve played as him in each one of these scenarios. If you think about it Mario is a pretty good role model. I’ll hopefully get into more detail about that in my project so I won’t ruin the reason why here. Mario has been around forever it feels like and is played in most every country so Mario is a well known individual. He is pry in a lot of peoples past because of his great popularity, so many people can identify with Mario as a video game character. I think Mario will connect with my question well because he or some other video game character or even video game has impacted your youth and definetly impacts our youth today.

Critical Question

As I was typing this post I was laying in my bed and I was trying to hard to sit here and think about a really good critical question. There were 8 questions you wanted us to answer to help us think or a critical question better and in this part of the post I will talk about and try to answer those 8 questions. The first answer you wanted us to answer was what catches our eye around the room and why. Since I was sitting in my room it was easy to find things that caught my eye in my room, but I’ll just name the biggest thing that stood out to me. The first thing that stood out to me was all of my trophies on my dresser. I have a ton of trophies and they mean a great deal to me because they show I’m a hard worker and dedicated to what I do. The next question we were asked to answer was what did we think as we showered last. My answer to this question is always a similar answer no matter what’s going on in my life and the answer is whatever song is stuck in my head. I like to sing or rap when I’m in the shower and I’m not sure why because many of my family members have told me I was a terrible singer, but I think I’m like a young Michael Jackson with my vocals. The third question we were asked to deliberate on is what did I think about when I fell asleep last night. Usually I can remember what I was thinking about before I fell asleep and it usually has something to do with football, but last night I was so tired I couldn’t tell you what I did 30 minutes before I went to sleep. It was all a blur after about 10:30, but I did have a quality sleep! The next question was about my favorite course in high school/college, and for this question I will talk about my favorite high school course which was team sports. Team sports was a PE type class where you play all types of sports that involve teams. I liked this course because I loved to compete and have fun with my friends. The fifth question we had to answer was what is the most recent argument you had with your friends or your family. The most recent argument I had was with my friends and it was about if Lebron is better than Kobe. Of course this question always comes with a heated argument when it comes to basketball fans. My stance on this question is that Lebron is better than Kobe and I would go into more detail on this question but that would definitely take up way more than 600 words and I need to answer 3 more questions. All I have to say about this is Lebron makes players around him better which in turn shows how good of a player he is. The next question is what feelings we are feeling right now, and as of now I am pretty happy because I’m with my girl friend as I type this paper. My girlfriend is one of my best friends so being in her present always tends to make me happy. My home community is very important to me because I have lived here for over 13 years so that’s a big chunk of my life in the same house. I live right next to the elementary I went to, so that always brings back good memories that I had in there.

When I was thinking about my critical question many things popped into my mind but I wanted to think about something that was really a relevant question to me. The things I wanted to think about was what I liked/loved the most. The critical question I came up with is: What is the impact of violent video games on our youth? I thought this was a great critical question because you can branch off of the question and make many other questions out of this. I chose this question because video games are something I enjoy a lot and I always here on the news or read in a newspaper about a child going on a shooting spree in a school or something and a lot of the time the media contributes this to violent video games, and I want to find out how true this statement could be. My question is relevant to me because I played violent video games as a child and I want to know what the experts think and how others feel about the affects. Also because I hate seeing a tragedy like a school shooting on the news, so if there is a way to prevent these things from happening I would be very happy to know. Another point why its relevant to me is because one day I will have children and I will have to make the decision on whether I should let my child play these games or not. The reason that this question is relevant to my community is really the same reason why its relevant to me, and that s because we have all seen a tragedy happen like this on the news or something and seeing this should make all people feel a little sad inside. I’m also sure many people have played these games in there child hood, so I want to see if these games ever made them violent or aggressive. I think my question will fit great with the 3 projects we have in class because the first project is about our personal experiences with our question and that will be easy for me because I’ve been playing video games for as long as I can remember. For the second project I think I can look at youth that play violent video games and also look at the group of individuals that did some of the worst mass shootings in US  history. And for the 3rd project it will be a little tougher and I will have to think about this one  little more, so I cant really elaborate on this question at this time. I don’t have many questions or concerns about this, but is my question a good enough question to ask regarding a critical question?

Introduction

The first thing I will write about in this blog is totally going to be about me. Hi I'm Austin Rose and I was born and raised in Lincoln, NE. I was born to my two parents Dan and Deborah Rose, and I also have 3 sisters: Cortney, Melissa, and Kim. Family is very important to me, because without the love and support of your family life is a very hard thing to get through. They mean the world to me and without them I don't know where I would be today. Also another thing that is very important to me in football. I love football and I've been playing it since 2nd grade. I now play for the University of Nebraska, so obviously its still a huge factor in my life. football has taught me many things in life, but the main 2 things I can transfer over to every day life is hard work and accountability. Hard work will always come into play no matter what you are doing in your life that you want to be the best you can be at. Accountability is another huge thing in your everyday life because if someone can't depend on you then you can't be trusted and trust is huge in my eyes. Other activities I enjoy are hanging out with my friends, playing video games, and playing basketball. Next I will talk about myself as a writer. I began writing as soon as a started a school program which was kindergarten and I have been writing ever since. First I learned how to spell my name because my sister taught me it before I was actually in school. I have done all types of writings from poems to essays I have pretty much done every writing you can think of. I was in an advanced placement English class in high school, so you can imagine how much writing we had to do in there. I think writing is very important because you can get your thoughts out on a piece of paper and just let your mind go where you want it to go. Obviously your writings are important to you because you took the time to write and put your thoughts on paper. The way I approach my writings now is a little different then how I used to go about my writings. When I was younger my imagination would run wild and I could write forever and never run out of ideas, but now it's a little harder to get my imagination going so I have to brainstorm ideas which takes more time. I am a writer who tries very hard to have a good imagination but sometimes my mind thinks faster than I'm writing and I will lose my place very easily and sometimes that makes it hard to come up with good stories. Also I'm terrible at explaining things which also makes it tough to write sometimes.
